Small Steps Toward Sustainable Living

We don’t need to share facts from Our Planet for you to know that our planet is in danger. Due to human action in the past, our earth is not what it used to be. EVERY day, we need to do our part to be as eco-friendly as possible. Here are some ways you can incorporate more sustainable lifestyle choices, working towards a more carbon-neutral planet.

Light Switch

1. Save Energy

Saving energy is simple - not only will you save $$$ on monthly bills, but you’ll also help in reducing carbon emissions. Turning off your lights when you leave the house, changing the temperature on your HVAC systems accordingly and unplugging appliances when they’re not in use are all things you can do in your home to save energy. Some utility companies provide steep discounts on “smart” thermometers and similar energy-saving devices - reach out to yours to see what they offer!

Plant Based Food

2. Eat More Plant-Based & Locally-Sourced Food

Cutting down your intake of meats will ultimately lower the pollution levels in the environment. Meat production and food delivery nationwide contribute to the carbon emission levels due to semis/delivery trucks on the road and the fossil fuels used to transport them. Support local businesses by shopping at farmer’s markets, subscribing to monthly delivery boxes from local farms (yes, this is a thing) and eating less meat will all contribute to a more sustainable lifestyle.

Recycle

3. Reduce. Reuse. Recycle.

It’s the phrase you’ve been hearing since you were a kid in school, right? Well, it still holds true today. Our landfills & oceans are filled with more pollution than ever, causing serious harm to our marine life, wildlife and our environment. While paper, plastic and glass are dedicated for recycling, you can purchase multi-use items (metal straws, reusable water bottles, bags, Tupperware, etc.) to help reduce the amount of waste.

REMEMBER: When you recycle, check that you’re distributing items into the correct recycle bin.

Garden

4. Grow Your Own Fruits & Vegetables

If you have space in your yard, growing your own fruits, vegetables and herbs can help you live a more sustainable life for yourself and your family. When you grow your own food, you know where it comes from AND you can have peace of mind in knowing that you’re eating food from your own backyard. This will also ensure that no unwanted pesticides will make their way to your dinner table. Pesticides also contribute to water and air pollution.
